Mother-of-pearl

          Mother-of-pearl is formed inside the shells of mussels found in European waters.The subtle colours of mother-of-pearl, which depend on the geographical area from which the shell is taken, range from blue and grey, through green to pink and purple.Mother of Pearl lends itself perfectly to inlay work & carvings such as beads & buttons. The outside shell can be ground off by hand or dissolved away with acids. The nacre (the layers secreted by the mollusc against irritants in the shell) is then polished to reveal beautiful iridescent colours.
