Mother-of-pearl

S007010a        Mother-of-pearl is formed inside the shells of mussels found in European waters. The subtle colours of mother-of-pearl, which depend on the geographical area from which the shell is taken, range from blue and grey, through green to pink and purple.Mother of Pearl lends itself perfectly to inlay work & carvings such as beads & buttons. The outside shell can be ground off by hand or dissolved away with acids. The nacre (the layers secreted by the mollusc against irritants in the shell) is then polished to reveal beautiful iridescent colours. The best Mother of Pearl comes from molluscs such as the abalone, nautilus and pearl oyster which are found in the tropical seas, most notably around Australia, the Philippine and South Sea Islands, Panama and Lower California.Beautiful mother of pearl oval blister pendant 1 piece, with natural texture.
