Opal
All of Nature’s splendour seems to be reflected in the manifold opulence of fine Opals: fire and lightnings, all the colours of the rainbow and the soft shine of far seas.
Numerous legends and tales surround this colourful gemstone, which can be traced back in its origins to a time long before our memory, to the ancient dream time of the Australian aborigines. It is reported in their legends that the creator came down to Earth on a rainbow, in order to bring the message of peace to all the humans. And at the very spot, where his foot touched the ground, the stones became alive and started sparkling in all the colours of the rainbow. That was the birth of the Opals. The group of fine Opals includes quite a number of wonderful gemstones, which share one characteristic: they shine and sparkle in a continually changing play of colours full of fantasy, which experts describe as “opalising”. Due to the differing percentage of water, Opals may easily become brittle. They always contain water – usually between 2 and 6 per cent, but sometimes even more. Thus if stored too dry or exposed to heat over a longer period of time, Opals will show fissures and the play of colour will become paler.
Therefore, Opal jewellery should be worn as often as possible, for then the gemstone will receive the needed humidity from the air and from the skin of its wearer. or ages people have been believing in the healing power of Opal. It is reported to be able to solve depressions and to help its wearer find the true and real love. Opals are supposed to further enhance the positive characteristics for people born under the zodiac sign of Cancer. Black Opal is recommended to those born under Scorpio, and Boulder Opal is the lucky stone for Aries.
Why is 18K gold more valuable than 14K?
18 Karat gold is more pure, meaning it contains a higher percentage of gold . Pure gold is 24-Karat (24K), 18-Karat gold is 75% pure, 14-Karat is 58% pure, 10-Karat is 41% pure etc.
Lampworking Glass
Making glass beads is called lampworking because hundreds of years ago, artisans heated glass using oil lamps. It is also known as flameworking or torchworking, Glass beadmaking is an ancient art, and has been practiced for more than 3000 years but throughout history the art of making glass beads has been shrouded in secrecy.
Now the word is out and beadmakers willingly share information. Glass beads have been used for adornment, trade, currency and religious rituals in cultures all over the world. Many cultures have used, worn and traded glass beads, and they are still prized for their ornamental and collectible value today. It’s hard to imagine a time when glass wasn’t a part of everyday life, Glass objects were reserved for royalty in some cultures. In other societies, ownership of glass was regulated by price — if you could afford the luxury of glass, it was yours. Glass can be cut and polished into faux gemstones, also be stretched and pulled into any shape imaginable. It’s no wonder that creative people throughout the world choose to express their artistic talents with glass. How Lampwork Beads are Made? To create glass beads, lampworkers melt narrow rods of glass with the flame of a torch. The molten glass is wound around a mandrel, a thin length of stainless steel. The space occupied by the mandrel becomes a hole through the bead when the bed is slipped away. Turning the mandrel and holding it in different positions allows gravity to help the bead take form, but tools are also used to push and pull glass beads into shape. Lampworking is a skill that takes a great deal of practice and patience. A lampwork bead artist understands the glass and the torch, and must learn how much heat it takes for glass to flow, how much heat can be applied to a bead that’s already shaped before it becomes molten again and loses shape, when to add decorative elements and how different colors of glass interact with each other.
Mother-of-pearl
Mother-of-pearl is formed inside the shells of mussels found in European waters. The subtle colours of mother-of-pearl, which depend on the geographical area from which the shell is taken, range from blue and grey, through green to pink and purple.Mother of Pearl lends itself perfectly to inlay work & carvings such as beads & buttons. The outside shell can be ground off by hand or dissolved away with acids. The nacre (the layers secreted by the mollusc against irritants in the shell) is then polished to reveal beautiful iridescent colours. The best Mother of Pearl comes from molluscs such as the abalone, nautilus and pearl oyster which are found in the tropical seas, most notably around Australia, the Philippine and South Sea Islands, Panama and Lower California.Beautiful mother of pearl oval blister pendant 1 piece, with natural texture.
