What are corals?

Corals are the product of tiny living beings which settled in enormous colonies in the depths of warm seas long before our time. The polyps, surrounded by a fleshy skin, excrete a carbonic substance from which the corals grow like trees and branches. These can attain a height of sixteen inches (40 cm), though the actual branches seldom exceed one and a half inches (4 cm). At the forks, they are somewhat thicker. It is from these parts that the precious raw material for jewellery items, large coral beads or carvings is obtained.

Traditionally, the fragile little coral trees were brought up from the depths with trawl nets. However, since first-class corals have now become rather rare, divers are now deployed, in a less destructive process which involves their going down and harvesting the sensitive coral branches. After that, the branches are cleaned, sorted and processed by means of saws, knives, files or drills. Coral is not usually ground or cut on a wheel. Read more…

I got the windfall

May 10th, 2010 900jewelry No comments

I am so excited today, because I am wearing a very nice red coral beads bracelet. In effect, I have it last year. It was the Christmas Gift that sent by one of my friends who comes from Philippine. I don’t like to wear jewelry before, as I thought it’s not so convenient to do the daily things. So I kept it in my box for nearly half year.

Yesterday when I cleaned up my bed room, I found it again. And I took it out, brought it to the mirror and wore it. I found it was exceptionally beautiful. The red coral beads are intervals with round gold beads, the colors caught my eyes. I feel cool and relaxed when it was in my hand. And it decorated my hand very beautiful. I won’t take it down.

So after that, I searched information about coral. And I found it was so interesting and powerful.

Coral is a gemstone created of calcium and calcite combining to create a wide variety of colors. Coral comes from the sea, created by sea life as a reminder of all that lives below the surface of the water.

Coral is one of the most ancient types of jewelry as it can be seen worn through thousands of years of history as necklaces, bracelets, even as hair adornments and pendants. Coral grows in the water in long branch like formations similar to what a tree must be like growing out of the water. Coral can be seen hundreds of thousands of years ago in religious ceremonies and in burials of royalty.

The lore of coral varies with the color of the stone. Red and orange coral gems are known to stimulate your energy and to make your body feel warmer from the inside out.

Red and orange corals are considered to promote fertility and to bring you energy. Red coral gives you an over all more calming feeling but should not be worn if you have high blood pressure, as the effects of red on your body are known to make your blood pressure rise a bit more.

Pink coral lore is that it will bring love to your life, increasing your caring and compassion abilities. The white coral is one of the most sought out, as it will soothe your mind, heal your body and relieve stress from your life. White coral lore is that it will soothe your nerves.

A great lore of the coral is that is has a powerful charm that will stop bleeding, and injuries will heal faster . Coral is believed to ward off hurricanes, evil spirits and to bring good weather.

Black coral lore is that it will ward off evil and negativity in your life. Coral is the birthstone for October and for the astrological sign of Taurus . Coral lore is suggested that it is given as an anniversary present on your 35th anniversary to promote a healthy life and a healthy love life at the same time.

It’s really the windfall to me. Actually, if you live carefully and pay attention to everything around, you will really gain a lot.

About Coral

November 6th, 2009 900jewelry No comments

Coral is not a mineral but a hard calcareous substance consisting of the continuous skeleton secreted by many tribes of marine coelenterate polyps for their support and habitation. It is found growing plant-like on the sea-bottom. With pollution on the rise everywhere it is becoming increasingly rare, to the extent that even the most prized, the Mediterranean coral, is threatened with extinction.

Coral was very popular until a few years ago, but has now become too expensive for most pockets. Its increasing rarity does. however, make it a good long-term investment. You would be wise to buy Italian coral rather than specimens from the Far East, which have often been adulterated.

The best corals are generally considered to be those of a deep rose red colour, though some jewelers would tend to disagree. Understandably so, when it is almost impossible to find more than one or two necklaces of this shade in a hundred ! As regards white and pink varieties, choose without hesitation the colour known as “angel’s skin”.

Weight-wise, coral is worth more on today’s market than gold, which is why it is such a sound investment provided, and I stress this, it is of the best quality. The finest specimens come from Sardinia and Tunisia; larger, less fine ones from Japan and China.

Coral is cut en cabochon or used for beads and sometimes small carvings. Beware of imitations, such as coloured shell or bone.
