How to Tell If a Jade Bracelet Is Fake

knowledge culture9ee396770db105cda0e8dc362f20e0b6 image 250x2501 How to Tell If a Jade Bracelet Is FakeBefore you hand over your money to buy a jade bracelet, make sure it is genuine. Jade collectors can identify a real gemstone by its color and other features, but you can use other easy methods to authenticate the jade in a bracelet.

  1. Step 1

Find an inconspicuous area on the back of the bracelet. Using a steel knife, try to scratch a small area of the stone. Real jade is harder than steel and likely will not scratch. Otherwise, it may be nephrite—a mineral that is less dense than jadeite. You may have difficulty persuading a vendor to do this.

  2. Step 2

Enclose the bracelet in your palm and warm the stone to your body temperature. Put down the bracelet and wait for about 30 seconds. With the end of your tongue, touch the portion of stone that you held in your fist. If the stone feels cool, it’s probably genuine. Jade will remain cooler than most cheaper substitutes.

  3. Step 3

Hang a jade bracelet from the fingers of each hand. Bring the two pieces together, and remember the pitch of the sound they make. Do the same with two bracelets made of glass. The pitch of the glass bracelets will be lower than that of jade bracelets.

  4. Step 4

Run your fingernail across the jade. You should feel no bumps, even if the piece is highly polished. This test is easy and accurate, because jade is very smooth by its nature.

  5. Step 5

Break a piece of the jade if you are still not satisfied about its authenticity. Jade is more durable than most substitutes, so this should be difficult. Look closely at the fragments. Genuine jade will show unique mineral particles, but glass will have its commonly smooth pattern. This method will destroy the bracelet, but you will have the satisfaction of knowing whether the stones are real or fake.

Do You Have A Jade?

What is jade?

‘Jade’, or yu, as it is called in China, is strictly speaking a generic term for two different gems, nephrite and jadeite. The name is derived from the Spanish ‘piedra de ijada’, loin-stone, jade having been recognised by the Amerindians as a remedy for kidney ailments. Because of its beneficial effect on the kidneys, the stone was also known as ‘lapis nephriticus’. That, indeed, is where the term ‘nephrite’ came from.

Jadeite and nephrite are both regarded in China as ‘zhen yu’, ‘genuine jade’. It was not until the beginning of the 19th century that mineralogists and gemmologists started to differentiate between them, since they bear a considerable resemblance to each other in terms of their appearance, their hardness and the properties they exhibit when being processed. Both are tough, since they consist of dense, close-grained, matted aggregates, but they differ from one another in their chemical composition and colours. Nephrite ranges mainly from mid to dark green or grey-green, but it can also be white, yellowish or reddish. Rarer, and somewhat tougher, jadeite displays hues which include green, but also white or pink, and reds, blacks, browns and violets. In both minerals, the way the colour is distributed varies a great deal. Only in the very finest jade is the colour evenly distributed. Both nephrite and jadeite often have veins, blemishes and streaks running through them, though these may not always be regarded as flaws. On the contrary, some of these patterns are considered particularly valuable. Read more…

Make Jade Pendant Necklace

900jewelryjade teardrop necklace.thumbnail Make Jade Pendant Necklace

I am a lover of simplicity and also the color green, so it goes without saying that this jade pendant  necklace is a hit for me!

Round up about 15 inches of gold chain (less or more, depending on your preference), a clasp, two 6mm jump rings, three 10mm jump rings, 2 inches of 20 gauge permanently colored wire and a jade teardrop bead. Grab your tools: chain-nose pliers, round nose pliers and wire cutters.

Cut your chain so you’ll have two pieces of exactly the same length. Use your two 6mm jump rings to attach your clasp. Got it? Good! You’re already half done.

Attach a 10mm jump ring to the last link on each end of the necklace, but don’t close the jump rings.

This is a very nice Spring. I look up and down my body and the clothes. Feel that there’s something lack. I am going to decorate  myaself. However, jewelry is the best. So i try to make some my own style. Spring is in the air with this gorgeous gem and pearl treat!

knowledge culturejade and pearl necklace thumbnail Making Jade and Pearl Necklace

This necklace idea started with the focal bead that I wanted to create a special piece for. It was especially eye-catching, and I knew only a spectacular supporting cast would do. I gathered some favorite jade gemstones, glass pearls and I was off on my creative journey!

Round up: gold beading wire, crimp beads, gold magnetic clasp, chain-nose pliers (for pulling wire tight), crimping pliers, nail clipper or wire cutters for snipping, white glass (or freshwater) pearls in 6mm, 8mm and 10mm sizes; green/turquoise(ish) glass pearls in 5mm, 7mm and 9mm sizes; jade beads, gold spacers and focal bead.

First, start with your focal bead and place it in the center of your design board. You are going to add beads going outward, starting from your focal bead. As this is a two-layer necklace, you are going to be adding beads on a ‘lower’ level and an ‘upper’ level. Note that your jade pieces cover both levels, so we’ll start with a jade piece on either side of the focal piece. Then the fun part: start adding your pearls and spacers in varying color and size sequences. I did 6mm white pearl on top and 9mm green pearl on bottom to start the sequencing, and then I changed up the sequencing, alternating between white and green pearls, small and larger millimeter sizes and tossing in two different style gold spacers here and there for flavor and interest.

Once you’ve got your beads arranged, extract the focal bead and treat it as you would a clasp; that is to say, pull two strands of wire through two holes/openings on either side of the focal bead, and add your crimp bead to each, crimping with the crimping pliers. Do the same to the other side.

Begin adding your beads, just as they are laid out on your design board. Do one side first, then the other side. Once one side is completed, add half of the magnetic clasp, and then add the other half when you complete your other side. Be sure to pull your wire tightly through the crimp bead as you are finishing and adding your clasp. Magnetic clasps are wonderful, and I’m a big fan, but do take care that your magnetic clasp has enough ‘pull’ to support this heavier piece. I’ve seen some magnetic clasps with weak ‘pull’; you definitely don’t want that with this gorgeous piece. Enjoy!

CRI News Reports:Ancient Gold Jewelry Found in Peru

November 4th, 2009 900jewelry 2 comments

The earliest known gold jewelry made in the Americas has been discovered in southern Peru.

The gold necklace, made nearly 4,000 years ago, was found in a burial site.

Archaeologist Eugenia Zevallos showed the necklace to journalists.

“This finding is very important for Peru and the whole of South America. It’s a gold necklace, made of gold beads laminated with turquoise…It’s from 4,500 BC so it’s 6,500 years old.”

Researchers say the necklace suggests someone at the time already had the time and knowledge to make this ornament. This is a completely shock to researchers because people living in this region at the time were found primarily hunter-gatherers.

There is no evidence at the site that shows how it was made.

Agate Information

November 2nd, 2009 900jewelry 6 comments

Agate is a variety of  chalcedony formed from layers of quartz which usually show varicolored bands. It usually occurs as rounded nodules or veins.

Often tiny quartz crystals form within the stone and add to the beauty and uniqueness of individual stones. These crystals are called druzy(sometimes misspelled as druzy). Lapidaries often cut just the drusy from an agate and jewelers use these drusy cabochons as the main stone or as an accent stone in their jewelry designs.

Some named varieties are: moss agate, eye agate; and plume agate, which looks like it’s filled with beautiful feather plumes .

Agate is a relatively inexpensive stone except for some varieties with unusual banded or scenic markings.

Agate is found all over the world including: the Africa, Asia, Brazil, Egypt, Germany, India, Italy, Mexico, Nepal, and the USA.
