knowledge culture5518179858a147a194fa55263a1048f6 image 250x250 Cultured Freshwater PearlsFreshwater and saltwater pearls may sometimes look quite similar, but they come from different sources.

Natural freshwater pearls form in various species of freshwater mussels, family Unionidae, which live in lakes, rivers, ponds and other bodies of fresh water. These freshwater pearl mussels occur not only in hotter climates, but also in colder more temperate areas such as Scotland: see the freshwater pearl mussel. However, most freshwater cultured pearls sold today come from China.

Current and historic industry

Although the Japanese freshwater pearl industry has nearly ceased to exist, it holds special historic value as the first country to cultivate whole freshwater pearls in Lake Biwa, using the Biwa pearly mussel (Hyriopsis schlegeli). The industry attempted a comeback with a mussel hybrid (Hyriopsis schlegeli/Hyriopsis cumingi) in Lake Kasumigaura in the last decade, but this venture also met with failure, with production ceasing in 2006. The pearl farm in Tennessee also holds special historic value as it is the only freshwater pearl outside of Asia, founded by the late John Latendresse, it continues as a tourist attraction. Today China is the only commercial producer of freshwater pearls, producing 1500 tons (2005)using the triangle shell mussel (Hyriopsis cumingii) and several hybrids that have shown heterosis from several mussel species.

How to Take Care of Freshwater Pearls

Freshwater pearls, whether they’re natural or cultured, possess a soft surface which can easily be scknowledge culturec4854fc006ac94ea733ef92b0959a107 image 250x250 Cultured Freshwater Pearlsratched or damaged. As such, it’s imperative that you keep your pearl jewelry separate from other jewelries. It’s also better to place them inside a pouch rather than a jewelry box because the latter’s surface can also cause nicks to appear in pearl jewelry.

The acidity level of a woman’s skin may affect the wearing life of pearl jewelry. If a pearl necklace is constantly being worn by a woman with a particularly high level of acidity in her skin, the acidity will gradually seep into the pearl, affecting its luster and shape. To prevent this from happening too soon, you should always polish your pearls with a non-abrasive cloth after taking them off.

Be careful about exposing pearl jewelry to chemicals. Spraying perfume while you’re wearing your pearl necklace can cause considerable damage to them over time. You must also avoid spilling any liquid on them, especially when it has rather strong properties such as lemon and vinegar.

Heat can also cause damage to pearl jewelry. If you persist in wearing your pearl jewelry in hot and humid weather, the climate can change the color of your pearls or worse, cause cracks to appear on the surface. Dry unmoving air is also bad for your pearls.

Make sure that you are using only jewelry cleaners specifically intended for pearl cleaning and nothing else. You can not steam-clean pearls as well. If you wish to preserve the luster of your pearls, you can use a drop of olive oil on them.

Pearl jewelry is amazing to possess not only because of its natural beauty but also because of the amount of hard work put into them. Hard work by humans and nature combined.

Making Jade and Pearl Necklace

This is a very nice Spring. I look up and down my body and the clothes. Feel that there’s something lack. I am going to decorate  myaself. However, jewelry is the best. So i try to make some my own style. Spring is in the air with this gorgeous gem and pearl treat!

knowledge culturejade and pearl necklace thumbnail Making Jade and Pearl Necklace

This necklace idea started with the focal bead that I wanted to create a special piece for. It was especially eye-catching, and I knew only a spectacular supporting cast would do. I gathered some favorite jade gemstones, glass pearls and I was off on my creative journey!

Round up: gold beading wire, crimp beads, gold magnetic clasp, chain-nose pliers (for pulling wire tight), crimping pliers, nail clipper or wire cutters for snipping, white glass (or freshwater) pearls in 6mm, 8mm and 10mm sizes; green/turquoise(ish) glass pearls in 5mm, 7mm and 9mm sizes; jade beads, gold spacers and focal bead.

First, start with your focal bead and place it in the center of your design board. You are going to add beads going outward, starting from your focal bead. As this is a two-layer necklace, you are going to be adding beads on a ‘lower’ level and an ‘upper’ level. Note that your jade pieces cover both levels, so we’ll start with a jade piece on either side of the focal piece. Then the fun part: start adding your pearls and spacers in varying color and size sequences. I did 6mm white pearl on top and 9mm green pearl on bottom to start the sequencing, and then I changed up the sequencing, alternating between white and green pearls, small and larger millimeter sizes and tossing in two different style gold spacers here and there for flavor and interest.

Once you’ve got your beads arranged, extract the focal bead and treat it as you would a clasp; that is to say, pull two strands of wire through two holes/openings on either side of the focal bead, and add your crimp bead to each, crimping with the crimping pliers. Do the same to the other side.

Begin adding your beads, just as they are laid out on your design board. Do one side first, then the other side. Once one side is completed, add half of the magnetic clasp, and then add the other half when you complete your other side. Be sure to pull your wire tightly through the crimp bead as you are finishing and adding your clasp. Magnetic clasps are wonderful, and I’m a big fan, but do take care that your magnetic clasp has enough ‘pull’ to support this heavier piece. I’ve seen some magnetic clasps with weak ‘pull’; you definitely don’t want that with this gorgeous piece. Enjoy!

About Coral

November 6th, 2009 900jewelry No comments

Coral is not a mineral but a hard calcareous substance consisting of the continuous skeleton secreted by many tribes of marine coelenterate polyps for their support and habitation. It is found growing plant-like on the sea-bottom. With pollution on the rise everywhere it is becoming increasingly rare, to the extent that even the most prized, the Mediterranean coral, is threatened with extinction.

Coral was very popular until a few years ago, but has now become too expensive for most pockets. Its increasing rarity does. however, make it a good long-term investment. You would be wise to buy Italian coral rather than specimens from the Far East, which have often been adulterated.

The best corals are generally considered to be those of a deep rose red colour, though some jewelers would tend to disagree. Understandably so, when it is almost impossible to find more than one or two necklaces of this shade in a hundred ! As regards white and pink varieties, choose without hesitation the colour known as “angel’s skin”.

Weight-wise, coral is worth more on today’s market than gold, which is why it is such a sound investment provided, and I stress this, it is of the best quality. The finest specimens come from Sardinia and Tunisia; larger, less fine ones from Japan and China.

Coral is cut en cabochon or used for beads and sometimes small carvings. Beware of imitations, such as coloured shell or bone.

The Pearl , having grown at the hinge of the clam, is undoubtedly one of the largest pearls in the world. Up until now, it has been virtually unknown and only has been recently named.

This large pearl below, which is partly fossilized, is also from the giant clam and still attached to the shell. Boy, these clams must enjoy making pearls! Since the large clams never leave their resting place or move, maybe that makes them more prone to grow pearls.

Jewelry Design Competition : MTV Awards a hoop dream for jewelry

October 17th, 2009 900jewelry 36 comments

New York – It seems as if nearly all the stars at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awardsreceived the same memo: Wear extra-large hoop earrings, an armful of
bracelets or a sparkly or metallic dress – or all three at once.

Beyonce, who took home three Moonman awards including Video of the Year for her song Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It), wore a short red dress and more than a million dollars worth of diamond jewelry by Lorraine Schwartz, including a gigantic pair of hoop earrings and three bracelets.

The one-of-a-kind, $450,000 hoop earrings were crafted of diamond and rock crystal, and the trio of bangles, valued at $600,000, were made of lavender, green and black carved jade with
diamonds and rubies.

For her performance, Beyonce wore Lorraine Schwartz again, this time choosing tiered earrings with green and gray iridescent diamonds and a customized “Single Ladies” titanium hand-piece.

Among those seconding the hoops trend was Alicia Keys, who paired a sequined black cocktail dress with a large pair of hoop earrings (designer wasn’t specified), as well as several pieces by Lorraine Schwartz, including a large stack of platinum bangles featuring black and white diamonds, black jade and diamonds, and the signature “Against Evil Eye” diamond bracelet, plus a black jade and emerald cocktail ring set in platinum.

The trend proved versatile, with spike-haired Pink joining the hoop-la, too, wearing Siera diamond triangle earrings and a matching cocktail ring with a studded black-leather minidress. Pink also wore a white gold and pave diamond chain-link ring by R.S. Durant and an Irit Design oxidized
sterling silver and rose-cut diamond multi-chain bracelet.

The hoops craze headed for The Hills too, with star Kristin Cavallari accenting a sequined silver tube dress with
gunmetal and diamond hoop earrings by Sutra and a large cuff bracelet.

Country music’s teen queen Taylor Swift, who won for Best Female Video, wore a silver gown accessorized with oxidized gold and diamond mesh earrings and an oxidized gold cuff featuring 40 carats of diamonds, all by Lorraine Schwartz. (In one of the show’s headline-making moments, Swift’s acceptance speech was cut off by rap star Kanye West who was booed after he grabbed the microphone from Swift and made remarks about Beyonce, also nominated in the category, having one of the “best videos of all time.”)

Jennifer Lopez went the dramatic route with
slicked-back hair, a minidress and large platinum drop earrings featuring two interlocked asymmetrical links studded with black and white diamonds (another popular combination of the night), all by Lorraine Schwartz, whose pieces were all over the red carpet.

Leighton Meester of Gossip Girl fame wore a glittering silver minidress, studded sandals and platinum jewelry by Cathy Waterman, piling on a stack of platinum and diamond bracelets, including a red leather bracelet, multiple cocktail rings and earrings.

Another fashionista from The Hills , Lauren Conrad, was decked out in a black-and-white graphic-print dress accented with diamond floral band rings by Siera.

MTV wasn’t the only celebrity party this weekend. The 61st Primetime Creative Emmy Awards took place in Los Angeles on Saturday, with diamond and platinum styles out in full force.

Actress Lisa Edelstein paired a shoulder-baring blue gown with diamond and platinum ball bracelets, bangles and earrings, plus three diamond and platinum rings, all by Neil Lane.

On the red carpet, show host
Kathy Griffin accessorized a purple gown with diamond and platinum chandelier earrings, a white diamond and platinum cocktail ring and a wide diamond and platinum bracelet, also all by Neil Lane. On stage, the actress and comedian donned a pair of coral, white, yellow and black diamond and platinum drop earrings, a faceted black-diamond and platinum bracelet and a diamond and platinum ball ring, also by Neil Lane.

America’s Got Talent judge Sharon Osbourne opted for two platinum bracelets by Rhonda Faber Green and a platinum cocktail ring with a black diamond center by Erica Courtney.

Dancing with the Stars co-host Samantha Harris went the statement-necklace route with a dramatic platinum piece featuring turquoise stones and white diamonds by Beladora.
